14 14 14

By Jim Bruce

This is a poem I wrote for Valentines Day 2007 for my MaryJo... inspired in part by her own struggles to deal with change.

On a 14, many years ago
Young and angry, just a little sad,
But not bad,
Because it’s you, and that’s all I want you to be.

On a 14, nearer but still far.
Weighted down by more than weight
Worried about things like fat and fate
But not bad,
Because it’s you, and that’s all I want you to be.

Each iteration of you, changed by circumstance,
Still retains the spirit of the wicked girl,
Who simply needs to dance.

To sing at any age,
To laugh at any age,
To love at any age,
To joy me at any age.
To you at any age.

It isn’t easy to be anything,
To anyone, at any weight,
At any age, so you may as well be happy.

On a 14, today
Still struggling, it’s only fair
Because struggling is living,
And it’s not bad,
Because it’s you, and all you want to be.
