My cat scratches everything. Should I have my cat de-clawed?
Most veterinarians only recommend this as a last resort. Cats scratch to express themselves and mark their territory. Removing their claws can be very traumatic. It can also impact their sense of balance and rob outdoor cats of their ability to defend themselves.

What is Feline Leukemia Virus and can I catch it?
Feline Leukemia Virus is a virus that is specific to cats only. It is considered to be the most common cause of serious illness and death in domestic cats. It causes a breakdown in your cat's immune system causing your cat to become susceptible to many diseases that it might otherwise be able to fight off. It CANNOT be transmitted to humans or other species.

What can I do about a new cat that is afraid of me?
Some cats are afraid of people and can take time to warm up to you. The best course of action is to be patient and quiet with the cat. When you feed the animal, make certain to speak to the cat so it will begin to associate you with food. If it comes over to investigate, try allowing the cat to smell your hand and allow the animal to initiate contact, rather than picking it up.

My cat has been urinating everywhere, what can I do?
There are a number of things that could be causing this problem. Be certain you are keeping a clean litterbox. If you have recently changed litter brands, change back because cats don't like change. If you are using a heavily scented litter, try one with less perfume, such as a clumping brand. If your cat has not been fixed yet, it may be marking its territory. You should also speak with a veterinarian to help determine if the problem may be the result of a physical problem, such as a urinary tract infection.

What are the affects of gum disease on cats?
In addition to causing discomfort when eating, a cat with excessive tartar buildup on its teeth can develop heart valve disease and kidney infections. Seeing your veterinarian for complete dental care is the recommended solution.

Should I give my cat regular baths?
Although cats generally keep themselves pretty clean, there is nothing wrong with bathing them. If a cat develops a skin condition or does not keep clean they may need bathing. If you want to bathe a cat, it is better to start when they are kittens. Be cautious about what types of shampoos you use. Generally, human products are too harsh. Your veterinarian can recommend appropriate products.

Is it safe to feed my cat milk?
It isn't usually a very good idea. Cats have problems digesting milk, which may result in diarrhea.

Is it safe to feed my cat tuna fish?
The type of tuna created for human consumption contains an enzyme that destroys B1. Cats who regularly eat canned tuna fish may develop a B1 deficiency, which can result in serious health problems, even death.
